ACCOUNTABILITY FOR WATER PROGRAM BEGINS PHASE 2 WITH A VALIDATION WORKSHOP
The second phase of the Accountability for Water Program (AFW) officially kicked off in Kenya with a validation workshop that drew several stakeholders in the water sector. In the course of the meeting, the stakeholders delved into a comprehensive review of lessons learned from Phase One, with a strong emphasis on leveraging past successes to ensure an impactful second phase. The discussions were anchored in the aspiration that the AFW program would leave a lasting legacy beyond its timeframe, particularly by engaging the youth as champions of accountability in the water sector. Participants were provided with a detailed overview of the AFW Program's journey from its inception, highlighting key activities undertaken in Phase One and outlining the strategic plans for Phase Two.
A significant focus was placed on the authenticity of CSO research work. Stakeholders discussed the importance of having local (county) or national authorities endorse research to enhance its credibility and prevent it from being overlooked. Additionally, CSOs were encouraged to familiarise themselves with governmental operations to better showcase their contributions and navigate potential criticisms effectively. The dialogue also explored strategies to heighten government interest and involvement in CSO advocacy efforts, recognising the critical role of governmental support in driving systemic change.
The AFW Kenya Partners received a commendation for the program's robust Data, Evidence, and Advocacy approach, which will be instrumental in fostering accountability within the water sector. Stakeholders were urged to document their case studies meticulously and engage stakeholders across all levels to ensure comprehensive dissemination and impact. A recurring theme was the deliberate mentorship of young people, emphasising the creation of platforms such as round tables to discuss and address emerging issues in the water sector.
Overall, the meeting underscored the importance of a collaborative and strategic approach in Phase Two, building on the groundwork laid in Phase One. By focusing on authenticating research, enhancing government engagement, and empowering youth, the AFW program aims to not only address current accountability challenges but also to cultivate a sustainable culture of accountability in the water sector that endures well into the future.
